Dodoma has long been defined by its political role as Tanzania’s administrative capital, a designation that has shaped infrastructure investment and population growth without fully unlocking the region’s economic potential. That narrative is beginning to change, with Tanzania’s Finance Minister Khamis Mussa Omar making the case that the region’s geography, resources and untapped commercial opportunities position it to become a significant economic hub in its own right.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to Dodoma Regional Commissioner Rosemary Senyamule following his recent appointment by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Omar pointed to agriculture, trade, tourism and mining as sectors where the region can deepen its contribution to the national economy. “We also have significant opportunities in agriculture, which employs a large share of Tanzanians, alongside diverse crops, tourism potential and notably mining. Dodoma is among the regions rich in mineral resources and if value addition is enhanced in collaboration with other regions, citizens stand to benefit significantly,” explained Omar.
The Minister highlighted Dodoma’s central geographic position as a potential competitive advantage for trade, particularly if paired with infrastructure investment in dry ports for storage and container movement to domestic and international markets. Regional Commissioner Senyamule echoed the ambition, calling on public and private sector stakeholders to invest in international conference facilities, high-end hotels and mineral processing industries. These sectors would both complement and diversify the region’s existing economic base. The meeting signals a growing recognition that Tanzania’s administrative capital need not remain peripheral to the country’s economic growth story.
